Some valid points Zach Powell.
I’m using Ubuntu as the center of the discussion because it was my own doorway to Linux (which I only got into about 7 months ago) and is widely considered the most popular distro out there in terms of sheer numbers.
New users will most likely get steered toward either Ubuntu or Mint.
To your point about Ubuntu’s GUI option: yes that exists, but consider what happens when you enable the proprietary Nvidia driver and install it. Despite Valve citing Ubuntu as the officially supported distro for Proton, the version that gets installed (390?) is months behind the one Valve recommends (415).
Which means the user still has to figure out how to find and enable 3rd-party repos. They may have to “purge” the old driver, or blacklist the Nouveau driver. It’s pretty involved.
However, I respect what you’re saying about other distros. Deepin and Manjaro are far more up to date and make the overall GPU driver installation much easier.
Perhaps it would only be fair to shine a light on who’s doing it right.
